Message from the Executive Director
Lance Tackett
Having lived in several other cities, I’m continually struck by what makes Tulsa and Oklahoma City different. First, where in many places poverty is confined to specific neighborhoods, here we see the effects of deep, entrenched poverty all around us. Second, civic and business leaders in both cities are incredibly focused on long-term economic development, inspiring young professionals to make their mark on the region. Third, these are incredibly open communities for newcomers and new ideas, with the amenities of a medium-sized city and the welcoming feel of a small town.
Oklahoma will surprise many people for other reasons, too. The state is the leader in early-childhood education (ECE), and our region hosts one of the largest ECE cohorts in Teach For America. By teaching our youngest students the foundational skills and knowledge they need, a new generation of children can sidestep the achievement gap that is so pervasive in this region. With an incredibly diverse student body, Teach For America • Oklahoma is also part of Teach For America’s Native Achievement Initiative, seeking to educate Native Children, who experience some of the highest levels of poverty and illiteracy in the country.
I am honored to work in close partnership with Superintendent Keith Ballard, and other district, public, and private leaders to create educational opportunity for the children of Oklahoma. With this close collaboration I see an inspiring future for our region.
Lance leads Teach For America • Oklahoma and its 200 corps members, who collectively impact more than 13,000 students in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Lance joined Teach For America as a Charlotte corps member in 2006, where he led his ninth graders at West Charlotte High School to more than two years of academic gains in one year. A first-generation college student, Lance graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara, participated in a graduate program for nonprofit management at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and is currently working towards a M.Ed. in educational administration, curriculum, and supervision at the University of Oklahoma.
